Minnesota reached a significant milestone in its journey towards cleaner energy in 2023, with zero-carbon power accounting for 54% of the state's electricity generation, according to a recent report. Released by Clean Energy Economy Minnesota (CEEM) and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (BCSE), the 2024 Minnesota Energy Factsheet highlights the state's continued progress in reducing carbon emissions and embracing renewable energy sources.
One of the key findings of the report is the substantial reduction in carbon emissions from Minnesota's power sector, which are now 54% below 2005 levels. This exceeds the national average reduction of 42% and reflects a concerted effort to transition towards cleaner energy alternatives. Furthermore, renewable sources contributed to one-third of the state's electricity generation in 2023, underscoring Minnesota's commitment to sustainable energy practices.
The surge in electric vehicle registrations in 2023 also signals a growing interest in clean transportation options. With a 55% increase from the previous year, Minnesota is witnessing a notable shift towards electric vehicles, aligning with broader efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Moreover, advancements in hydrogen energy, including increased electrolyzer shipments from companies like Minnesota-based Cummins, showcase the state's embrace of innovative technologies. Supported by incentives such as the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), these developments contribute to a more diversified and resilient energy landscape.
The report also highlights Minnesota's success in expanding renewable energy capacity while reducing coal dependency. Over the past five years, the state has added 2.2 GW of renewable energy capacity, emphasizing a transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
Gregg Mast, Executive Director of Clean Energy Economy MN, lauded Minnesota's achievements, attributing them to strong policy support and business innovation. He emphasized the state's leadership in reducing emissions, expanding renewable energy deployment, and promoting electric vehicle adoption.
The release of the 2024 Minnesota Energy Factsheet underscores the state's commitment to sustainable energy practices and serves as a testament to its leadership in the transition towards a cleaner and more resilient energy future.
